LEE, Laurence “Larry” R. Passed away peacefully at home on January 7, surrounded by loved ones. He was a distinguished lawyer and dedicated philanthropist, as well as a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Larry was born in 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago and then served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948. He returned to the University of Chicago for law school, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif, an honorary legal society. He earned his Juris Doctor degree with honors and became an associate with the law firm of Miller, Gorham, Wescott & Adams in Chicago. In 1955, Larry joined Abbott Laboratories where he was elected assistant secretary in 1961, and secretary and general counsel in 1963. He was named corporate vice president in 1970, and in 1981 was named senior vice president. He made major contributions to the company, including oversight of the creation and development of Abbott’s legal division. He was a respected corporate leader, spearheading legal negotiations for important corporate mergers and acquisitions. He retired from Abbott in 1988. Larry gave back to society and devoted much of his spare time to philanthropy. He served on the board of directors of the First National Bank of Lake Bluff, Illinois, and was a trustee for the Lake Bluff Public Library, the Village of Lake Bluff, and A Safe Place in Waukegan, Illinois. He had a lifelong commitment to education, which led him to become a trustee of Lake Forest College. There, he was instrumental in the design and building of a new library, a facility that suitably reflects the college’s commitment to both research and study. Larry and his family also endowed the Laurence R. Lee Family Chair in Natural and Mathematical Science at Lake Forest College, which remains a vital post. And, he served for four years as the first – and last – elected traffic court judge in Lake Bluff. Larry is survived by his wife Barbara (née Rogers); son Justin and his wife Alice, and their children Justin Jr., Christopher and Caroline; son David and his children Chelsea and Alexander. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 16, at 3:30 p.m., at the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel at Lake Forest College. There will be a reception immediately following at the college's Donnelley and Lee Library. Additional parking with shuttle service will be available at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to A Safe Place, 2710 17th St., Zion, IL 60099. Info: Wenban Funeral Home, Lake Forest (847) 234-0022 or www.wenbanfh.com
