Bertha Haug Dean, 101, formerly of Peoria, Illinois, died Thursday, April 1, 2010, at the Willows of Hawthorn Lakes in Vernon Hills, where she was a resident. Born February 7, 1909, in New York City to George and Bertha Kullen Haug, Bertha was the eldest of four children. As a teenager, she worked in her father’s store which sold leather goods and automobile accessories in Manhattan. After graduating from high school, Bertha attended Hunter College and later graduated from Packard Business School in New York City. From 1927 to 1933 Bertha worked in the Construction and Equipment Department of W. T. Grant Company in New York City. In 1933, Bertha moved to Chicago to accept a job with Montgomery Ward & Company. There she met and married Robert K. Dean, a medical student at Northwestern University Medical School. They were married on June 28, 1935, at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. In 1937, Bertha and Robert moved to Peoria, Illinois, where they put down roots in the community and reared three children. In 1956-57, they hosted the first high school foreign exchange student in Peoria sponsored by the American Field Service (AFS). In the 1960s, Bertha was Area Chairman for AFS. She also was a long time volunteer and member of the Service League of Methodist Medical Center and a charter member of the Peoria Medical Society Alliance. By 1987, Bertha became a 50-year member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria, where she and Robert formed many lifelong friendships. Surviving are three children: Robert H. Dean (Barbara) of Racine, Wisconsin, Dr. Frederick K. Dean (Ann) of Granger, Indiana, and Barbara D. Vallaly (the late Dustin) of Lake Forest, Illinois; two sisters: Mina H. Cory of New York and Dr. Elsie L. Haug of Chicago; eight grandchildren: William B. Dean (Kris) of Racine, Wisconsin, Charles H. Dean (Susan) of St. Petersburg, Florida, Andrew M. Dean (Jessy) of Evanston, Illinois; Frederick D. Dean (Kristen) of Wilmette, Illinois; Julie D. Parfrey (Richard) of Brookfield, Wisconsin; Emily I. Dean of Chicago; Michael D. Vallaly (Kristin) of Chicago, and Margaret A. Vallaly of San Francisco: twelve great-grandchildren, and ten nieces and nephews. Her beloved husband Robert predeceased her in 1991 after 56 years of marriage. Her younger brother Frederick J. Haug of New York also predeceased her. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, 700 East Westminster Road, Lake Forest, Illinois 60045. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Field Service, or Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria.
