She married John A. Stevenson of Lake Forest in November of 1950. They honeymooned in Cuba and a few years later did a driving trip to Alaska before it was a state. After considerable planning they were given a rental car in Seattle to be delivered to Fairbanks 2,000 miles north. On the then Alaskan highway, a gravel road constructed during WWII in 1943, they encountered all kinds of wild adventures. Joan was a dedicated volunteer from an early age starting with work at Chapin hall during the depression and through the 1960’s. She was a board member of the Lake Forest Hospital Woman’s Auxiliary from 1973-2006. She organized their annual benefit, served as a pink lady at the hospital and spent much time running the gift shop. Joan was also a member of the Junior Garden Club of Lake Forest for many years. Joan was an avid athlete with a love of all types of skiing. She spent the winter of 1950 in Aspen CO working for Aspen Ski Corporation as a slope packer while watching the 1950 FIS Alpine World championships. She also spent some time working at the famous Hotel Jerome in Aspen.Joan loved animals. She was never without a beloved companion. She especially loved turtles and had amassed a collection totaling 131 of them in all shapes and sizes. She also loved painting, sculpting and traveling. Her later years were spent traveling the globe often accompanied by her sister Nancy. She will be remembered for her generous heart and strength of character. Survivors include her sons John A.
