Rebecca (Becky) Means Jones of Lake Forest, IL died peacefully on April 24, 2010 with her family by her side. Born September 1, 1922 in Fayette, Missouri, she was the loving daughter of Brigadier General Lewis M. and Evangeline Boggs Means. Raised in Fayette, she attended high school in Jefferson City, MO and briefly attended Central Methodist College and the University of Missouri before transferring to Stanford University in Palo Alto, California where she graduated in 1944. After graduation she lived in St. Louis MO where she met her future husband, Philip N. Jones MD, at the Veiled Prophet Ball. She adored her family including children Robert N. Jones, MD (Mica) of Midland MI, Rebecca Ann Jones and Margaret Jones Barnhart (Steven) of Lake Forest; grandchildren, David R. Jones (Amy), Juliana M. Stein (Peer), Philip C. Barnhart, Douglas M. Barnhart, and Lucy Katherine Barnhart; and welcomed with joy this past year her first great grandchild, Leo Walter Stein. She and her husband lived in Kenilworth for over 40 years before moving to Lake Forest Place in 1998. She will be remembered for her indomitable and enthusiastic spirit, her love of faith, family, friends, community, country, gardening and politics, and for her ever optimistic and joyful outlook on life. These traits were demonstrated in the many leadership roles she served over the years. She was a Kenilworth precinct captain for many years. She was active with Boy Scouts and served as President of the Kenilworth Girl Scouts. She was a devoted member of the Kenilworth Union Church, serving as chairman for the Rummage Sale, the Christmas Bazaar, and the Woman’s Guild, as well as teaching Sunday school. She was a member of the Kenilworth Garden Club, and in the summer of 1986 was Chairman for the Garden Club of America’s Show of Summer. She was a member of the Woman’s Board of Rush Medical Center from 1981 until her passing. She was also a member of PEO, The Fortnightly of Chicago, and The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. With her engaging spirit, she was an active participant in the life of the communities of both Kenilworth and Lake Forest. At age 80 she became a hard working commissioner on the Lake Forest Historic Preservation Commission, and during the last several years she served as a committed Republican precinct chairman in Shields Township. A Memorial Service will be held at the Kenilworth Union Church on Saturday, May 1 at 3:00 with a reception following. The family invites all who knew and loved Becky to come and join in the celebration of her life.
