Arlan Kent Shorey, 63, of Lake Bluff died peacefully at home on Sunday, April 25, 2010, as a result of Glioblastoma (brain cancer). Arlan was born in Charles City, Iowa on April 19, 1947, the only child of the late Madelene and Lawrence Shorey. While attending the University of Iowa, he met the love of his life, Susan (Schreiber) Shorey and they married on August 2,1969. Upon graduation, they moved to Chicago and Arlan worked in the insurance industry. Arlan obtained his M.B.A. from Loyola University in 1973. That same year the couple welcomed their daughter Veva, followed four years later by their son, Daniel. Arlan continued working in the commercial insurance business until his retirement in 2008. An avid gardener, Arlan spent his free time outside working on the numerous flower beds dotting the family property. After Susan's sudden death in April 2009, Arlan travelled extensively, living his life to the fullest. Arlan spent the summer of 2009 in Alaska with his son, Daniel, and daughter-in-law, Anna, gardening, fishing and hiking. Arlan travelled to England and Italy in autumn 2009 with friends. Never one to let life keep him down, in February 2010 Arlan went on an extended hiking trip in Hawaii, followed by a trip to California and Arizona with long time friends. Arlan is survived by his daughter Veva Shorey of Lake Bluff, IL and his son Daniel (Anna) Shorey of Anchorage, AK. Preceded in death by his loving wife of thirty-nine years, Susan, and his grandsons Ryan and Dylan. The family thanks Arlan and Susan's many friends for their loving support these past twelve months.
