| Respected patriarch, Ray James Schoonhoven, Esquire, formerly of Chicago, passed away at his home in Lake Forest, Illinois, after a long illness, on July 10th, 2010. “The Chief” was 89 years old.
Ray was another of those members of the "Greatest Generation", who served in the Navy in World War II. Like so many others, he did his officer training at Navy Pier and his barracks during this training period was the former Abbott Hall. He went on to specialized training as a PT Boat commander at Whidbey Island Washington, and then was shipped out directly to the South Pacific where he commanded a PT Boat as part of General MacArthur's offensive to recapture the Philippines. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and continued to serve in the Navy Reserve on completion of his active duty when the war ended.
He returned to Chicago where he enrolled in Northwestern Law School and after graduation joined the Chicago based law firm then called Seyfarth, Shaw, Fairweather and Geraldson. During his career he was widely regarded as one of the premier management labor lawyers in the country and at one point was on the "short list" for appointment as Secretary of Labor. His clients included such notable companies as Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock (the largest shipyard in the country where the Navy's nuclear carriers and submarines are built), the University of Notre Dame, Walker Manufacturing (a major supplier to the automotive industry), and Maremont Corporation.
He was a dedicated mentor and teacher to several generations of lawyers who benefited from his depth of experience and knowledge of labor and employment law.
Ray was the beloved husband of the late Marie Dunn Schoonhoven. Much loved Father of Marie Kathleen (Kamie) Schoonhoven (Ed) Kocher, Ray James Jr., Pamela (John), John P. (Biancha), Rose (David) Lloyd. Loving Grandfather of Shawn, Peter and Christopher Lloyd, Kristen, Faybienne, Biancha and Sarah. Loving Great Grandfather of Kathleen and Sophia.
